Biertan is a piece for clarinet and percussion ensemble, composed by Thomas Vieira and commissioned by ICon Arts. Featuring clarinet soloist Ciprian Dancu, Biertan is inspired by a time and place of fortified churches and religious upheaval, iconic craftsmanship and community values.
Thomas employs a musical language combining 20th-Century austerity with Neo-Gregorian mystery, influenced by the divinity, people, landscape, and architecture during his Summer 2022 visit to Biertan. With backing by vibraphonist Alexandru Anastasio’s Brasov University percussion ensemble, Biertan portrays the traditions and vicissitudes of more than 500 years of history.
